My students and I are conducting research with two longitudinal data sets, both of people in their third decade of life. One data set is based on a six-year follow-up of a cohort of graduating university students, and the other is based on a community sample of young adults. Here are some areas of recent interest:
(1) A structural model of problem drinking in which drinking behaviour and alcohol problems are seen as related but distinct dimensions. This allows us, for example, to study who some drinkers are more or less vulnerable to alcohol problems, after accounting for the effects of their consumption.
(2) Stress-related drinking and alcohol problems, including negative life events, daily hassles and male role stress; while stress is not a strong predictor of drinking itself, stress-related drinking is related to more problems.
(3) The impact of employment problems on problem drinking, health status and depression. We have found that both unemployment and underemployment predict poorer health, even after controlling for their impact on health behaviour and on household income.
(4) The relationship of adult attachment style to health, and how emotional distress and a lack of social support may mediate this relationship.
(5) Motivations for drinking (emotional enhancement and coping, sociability, avoiding rejection) and reasons for not drinking or limiting drinking, and how these impact drinking patterns and problems. Developing lines of research include elaboration of an affective change model of problem drinking, impact over time of unemployment and underemployment, and the socioeconomic and social relationship bases of health and illness.
